Here’s an article from our local newspaper about the next Oakhall Church Café event…
“By recycling newspapers, we saved enough to buy an ancient ambulance – this was the vehicle that took a group of Caterham friends on our first expedition!”
PALESTINE, MOSCOW, WAR-TORN EUROPE…
The stories that Ian Mayo recounts about the journeys that this group of intrepid Caterham-adventurers then experienced are eye-wateringly exciting:
- overland to Palestine – a week’s driving in each direction, camping by the road and exploring the archaeological evidence for the Bible;
- through the Iron curtain in a bus rescued from a scrap yard, repairing it with tramlines salvaged from Moscow streets;
- using buses to enter into Poland to bring humanitarian aid as military law was imposed;
- travelling through war-torn Yugoslavia as the fighting raged to bring help to refugees…
IT ALL BEGAN IN CATERHAM!
“This all began right here in Caterham – and we’re still travelling! This year, 6000 people will journey with us. The coaches are now brand new (we now use planes too) the destinations vary from Norway to Nepal, from Jordan to Montenegro but those who travel with us have that spirit of adventure – a thirst to see something beyond our own horizons!”
A BIG PURPOSE
As well as exciting company and new places to explore, the big purpose of these expeditions is to give each traveller the opportunity to consider the big questions that we so often just brush over – purpose, identity, eternity… With a Bible study each evening, and space to think, many say that these have been life-changing adventures.
